The Chronicles of Narnia Book Sculpture Collection
For the senior exhibition Renew, I participated with other seniors to create a full gallery. My collection is the complete Narnia series brought to life out of each respective book along with the Stone Table as bookends.
This is based on the first book "The Magician's Nephew" which is about two children who accidentally transport themselves to new worlds every time they put on the golden ring, however, the green ring allows them to go back home. As the rings were the main object used to create the focal point of the book, I brought them to life out of the actual pages from the book. They are even arranged to circle important names.
This is based on the next book in the series, though it was written before the prequel. "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" includes a lot of imagery and I found it hard to select one thing to bring out which lead me to make the bookends as well. I chose the lamppost as it was very important to the author, crafting it out of polymer clay, and then painted the woods in which the lamppost is on the other side.
The next book "The Horse and His Boy" takes a step away from the main characters in the other stories and focuses on new characters and the talking animals of Narnia. I chose to create a horse of paper that is running out of the book as the main characters spend most of the book running about. All of the paper on the horse is pages from the actual book.
I really struggled to choose what to do with "Prince Caspian". There were so many options and nothing was so significant that it immediately came to mind. In the end, I decided on creating Queen Susan's Horn as like the Lamppost it is what transports the characters to Narnia for there to be a story in the first place.
The final book in the series, entitled "The Last Battle" ends with all the beloved characters who were still friends of Narnia entering Aslan's country, like Heaven, through a stable door. I used a door and painted what Aslan's Country was described to be like, using a spray-painted zip-tie as a doorknob.
My last piece in the show was the stone table from the second book. I had to troubleshoot and work through many ideas to finally come to what this piece became. It is a collection of pathway stones, bathroom tile, textured spray paint, E600, and acrylic paint.
